En 1889, cuando la producción industrial de Alemania superó a la de la agricultura, se convirtió en una potencia industrial. La Revolución Industrial, que Gran Bretaña tardó casi 100 años en completarse, tomó menos de la mitad de ese tiempo en Alemania.

Cuando estalló la Primera Guerra Mundial en 1914, la industria automovilística alemana había formado básicamente un sector industrial independiente, y la aplicación de motores de gasolina en automóviles se estaba volviendo cada vez más popular. Los motores de gasolina proporcionaron grandes oportunidades para el desarrollo de productos petroquímicos. Esto también sentó una base sólida para el éxito de "Norbert" en el futuro.

En 1929, su fundador Thomas (Thomas) estableció una empresa química llamada Thomas en Luwigshafen, conocida como la "capital química" en el norte de Alemania, que se dedicaba principalmente a la investigación y desarrollo de productos petroquímicos y a la producción y fabricación de productos petroquímicos. En 1931, Thomas Chemical Company comenzó a fabricar aceites de motor para automóviles por su cuenta y estableció la primera planta de producción externa en el Puerto Industrial de Mannheim. A partir de entonces, nació la Compañía Petroquímica Alemana Norbert.

Además de suministrar productos de aceite lubricante para automóviles a Mercedes-Benz, la Compañía Petroquímica Alemana Norbert también suministra productos de aceite lubricante a otras compañías automovilísticas en Alemania. Los productos de aceite lubricante de la Compañía Petroquímica Alemana Norbert se han vendido solo en Alemania. Desde 1981, la Compañía Petroquímica Alemana Norbert ha patrocinado varios campeonatos de rally de autos, y desde entonces, los lubricantes Norbert se han vendido en todo el mundo.

Norbert Lubricants se vende en 46 países de todo el mundo y tiene más de 70 actividades de marketing.

Con el fin de cumplir con los requisitos cada vez más duros del entorno de carreras y desarrollar productos de aceite lubricante de alto rendimiento, en 1987, la empresa alemana Norbert Petroquímica estableció su primer laboratorio en Munich. En 1997, "Norbert Synthetic Oil" fue lanzado y se hizo popular en Alemania. Sus productos fueron los primeros en utilizar aceites base sintéticos, convirtiéndose en una de las primeras marcas en el mundo en utilizar aceites sintéticos para producir lubricantes.

En 1999, la tecnología secundaria de hidrocraqueo se aplicó a la Investigación y Desarrollo de Productos. Todos los productos de la empresa utilizan aceite hidrogenado para mezclar productos de aceite lubricante de alta calidad. La primera empresa en utilizar aceite base hidrogenado secundario para fabricar aceite lubricante en el mismo período que Mobil y Shell.

En 1996, con el desarrollo continuo de la industria, el laboratorio de Munich desarrolló un nuevo tipo de producto de aceite de alta gama adecuado para la lubricación de equipos industriales modernos, y con el aumento de las ventas de lubricantes industriales, en 2000, Norbert se centró en el suministro de aceites industriales. En 2006, las ventas de aceites industriales incluso superaron las ventas de aceites para automóviles.
